WEEKEND ROUNDUP – MARCH 2023

On Friday at the prestigious Belfast City Annual Sports Awards our u15 & u16 ladies picked up the Junior Team of the Year Award thanks to their double Provincial and double National team XC victories – the girls couldn’t be there as they were all in Waterford for the Irish Schools XC – however it was very fitting to have Jacqueline Murtagh and her team along to share in the celebrations – the work they do at this fundamental stage is so important and provides the pathway for ongoing club development and success – so a big thank you! On Friday at the Coleraine/NI 5km Championships Lughaidh Mallon had a fantastic run in a stacked elite field going sub 15 for the first time with a new 61s 5k road PB of 14.52 – there was also a big PB for Lorcan Bell with 17.20 in race 2. At the Irish Schools XC on Saturday there was absolute carnage in a few of the races with many fancied runners capitulating to the difficult conditions.

Main highlights:- in what I believe is only his 3rd ever XC race Noah Harper had a brilliant run in the Junior Boys for 16th place; Aoife Magee was 9th in the Junior Girls and that should hopefully be enough to gain selection for SIABs in Scotland; Katie Graham then had an outstanding run in the Inter Girls for 5th and 1st Ulster finisher securing her place for SIABs. However it was Rory Armstrong who once again grabbed the headlines with a devastating performance in the Minor Boys – as always Rory ran his customary mature and controlled race and ran out an easy winner in the end – this is another huge achievement for Rory and backs up Lughaidh’s 2022 victory in the Inter Boys – inspirational young men! Finally on Sunday at the NI Indoors Sophia Young kicked off her track season with 2.29 2nd place finish in the u17 girls 800m, while at the Portadown Festival of Running Stephen Lunn rounded off a quite unprecedented weekend for the Club with a comfortable 10k victory in a fantastic new 87s PB of 33.20. – Jim McKeown
