NI AND ULSTER INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS 2023
Eight athletes from the club travelled to the indoor athletics stadium of the Technological University of the Shannon in Athlone for the NI and Ulster age group championships on the weekend of March 11/12.
And the athletes, seven sprinters and one endurance specialist who also high jumps, brought back one gold, three silvers and two bronze awards, all presented by club coach Gerry Carson in his role as the President of Athletics Northern Ireland.
Aida Zukauskaite powered her way to a runaway victory in the under 17 200m clocking 26.67 , taking almost two seconds of her previous personal best and later, in spite of a poor start took second in the 60m clocking another pb of 8.22.
In the girls under 15, 60m, Ella Mc Kelvey, who stumbled just after the start , fought back to grab third in a pb of 8.49.
Harry Nelson clocked a pb in the 200m with 25.59 before taking second in the under 17 triple jump.
Then in the under 15 category Adam Harrison raced in the 800m and later took third in the high jump with his best of 1.43m.
On to the relays and in what commentator John Glover called the race of the day , our girls under 17 squad took second in the 4x 200m relay, losing the gold by a mere 0.3 seconds after an enthralling battle with the Finn Valley sprinters.
Aida lead off to Madison Hanna, who passed to Sophie Stevenson with anchor Anna Hogg almost closing down on Finn Valley’s final stage runner.
In the under 16 category Anna clocked a pb of 8.36 in the 60m, Sophie recorded 8.44, and Madison 8.57. Then in the 200m it was Anna- 27.47, Madison 28.33 and Sophie 28.33.
In the under 17 section Oliver Taylor also grabbed a pb with 27.35.
Now the u17 relay race in the All Ireland indoors on March 25, while Aida and Ella compete in the 60m with Aida also tackling the 200m on April 1& 2, with Harry going in the triple jump and Adam in the high jump the same weekend.
