Lagan Valley in association with the British Milers Club, once again promoted the biggest Track and Field meeting of the year at the Mary Peters Track. The meeting attracted athletes from all over the UK and Ireland as well as Germany and a touring party from Australia. The Sky Blue and Navy vests were well to the fore producing wins for Layla haslett, Rhys McManus, Anna Hogg, Lorcan Bell and Ruairi Hollywood. In the sprints Rachel McCann (North Down) set out her stall for selection to the World Championships later in the year in Tokyo by winning a hotly contested 400m in which all eight women broke 60 secs a performance emulated by six others in the ‘B”Race. The middle distance races were outstanding with Eimear Maher (DSD) winning the 1500 metres in 4:13.33. The highlight of the meeting was once again the Men’s 1 Mile in which Nick Griggs narrowly missed Jim McGuiness’s NI Record with a superb 3:55.97 clocking. The best of the Field events was the battle between the Gallen sisters in the Hammer with both throwing over 50 metres and success going on this occasion to Adrienne. Aida Zukauskaite took the third spot on the rostrum. There were podium places also for Rebekah Abbott and Sophie Wylie in the Long Jump and for Jude Glover in the High Jump.
The Northern Ireland Mixed 4 x 400 metres Championships held in conjunction saw Lagan Valley taking Gold and Silver with the ‘A’ team running an excellent 3:46.29.
